Duke’s Vineyard - Porongurup, Western Australia
-
Great Southern encompasses the subregions of Albany, Denmark, Frankland River, Mount Barker and Porongurup. The name ‘great’ is not taken lightly – the area is almost ten thousand square miles. Coastal in the southern areas of Denmark and Albany (which are also towns), three wine subregions lie inland. As a wine region, it was planted a few years after Margaret River and its size in comparison to “Margs” gives it a wider selection of core varietals. Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and even a little Pinot Noir are spread across the region.

Ben Cane and his partner, Sarah Date, purchased Duke's Vineyard in April 2022 when founder Duke Ranson, at 82, decided to retire. Duke's Vineyard is a family-owned, boutique winery that has achieved many outstanding accolades over a 20+ year history including being awarded Best Australian Wine of the Year in 2019 for the 2017 Magpie Hill Reserve Riesling by James Halliday’s Wine Companion.
Located at the western foot of the stunning ancient Porongurup range in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, the ten-hectare vineyard was planted in 1999 with Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, and Pinot Noir in 2023 — varieties beautifully suited to this cool-climate region.

Driven by a profound respect for nature, Ben Cane's winemaking philosophy is a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. He believes that great wines are born from a holistic approach that encompasses both the vineyard and the cellar. By carefully selecting premium fruit and employing minimal intervention techniques in the winemaking process, he allows the inherent character of each vineyard site to shine through in his wines.

Magpie Hill Reserve: Our flagship range of reserve wines to drink now or cellar.
