David Franz - Barossa

  • In terms of international recognition, the Barossa is to Australia what the Napa Valley is to the United States. Nestled about a two-hour drive north-east of Adelaide, the Barossa Valley is one section of a larger “Barossa Zone” which includes the more altitudinous Eden Valley. Ample sunshine, low relative humidity and rainfall make it a little warmer than Bordeaux. Big Barossa Shiraz is often the frontline of Aussie exports – the Australian wines that Robert Parker prefers tend to come from here. But this style is not universal and there are plenty of restrained, velvety Shirazes and blends (often with Mataro and Grenache).

  • Through experience and great mentors, Dave’s knowledge and passion for his vines has grown. He manages the family’s Stelzer and Stonewell Hill vineyards (around 75 acres). Carte blanche in the vineyards has allowed for a focus on producing fruit of the highest quality, without compromising for the sake of yields. In real terms it means that he produces wines right through from the vine to the bottle. Pruning is where the journey starts, not just when the grapes are picked and arrive at the winery.

  • In 2000, Dave managed to convince his dad (Peter Lehmann) to back him for a more serious vintage. He used the facilities at Peter Lehmann Wines to make his own reds, simultaneously working on the PLW vintage. Until 2003, he worked his dad’s vineyards and made his own wines at PLW. However in the years following, he’s managed to set up his own shop with a little help – as David says, “hey Dad, can I borrow some dosh?” – and launched with Shiraz and Cabernet. He now makes a veritable cornucopia of wines since those humble ‘shed built’ beginnings…. Nine or so years ago he made it a little personal mission to try something new every year, and so each year he has made a little more in both quantity and in variety.
